Rarely, and the reason is the ground rather than the product. These systems need soil that drains and steady moisture to keep breaking material down, and much of Las Vegas sits on hard caliche with dry soil above it. A hole that will not drain becomes a container, so the input keeps arriving and very little leaves.
The in-ground dog waste digester is one of the most appealing products in this category, and one of the hardest to make work in Las Vegas. It is a different idea from composting, which is covered separately in the post on composting dog waste in the desert, and different again from ordinary disposal, which is covered in how to dispose of dog poop in Las Vegas. This post is about the buried unit specifically. I am not going to name a brand or tell you a particular product does not work, because the problem here is not the product. It is the ground.
What an In-Ground Digester Is Supposed to Do
The concept is simple and genuinely clever. You sink a container into the ground, usually with an open or perforated bottom, put waste in through a lid at surface level, and add water and often a packet of enzymes or bacteria. Biological activity breaks the material down, liquid drains away into the surrounding soil, and the volume never builds up. People describe it as a small septic system for the dog, which is roughly the right mental model.
Three things have to be true for that to keep working. The surrounding soil has to accept liquid. There has to be enough moisture for biological activity to continue. And the temperature has to stay in a range where that activity does not stall.
In much of the country all three are true most of the year without anybody thinking about it, which is why these products exist and why owners elsewhere are happy with them. Now look at what those requirements mean here.
What Desert Soil Does to That Plan
Caliche
Much of the Las Vegas Valley has caliche in the soil profile, a hardened calcium carbonate layer that can be thin and crumbly or thick and close to rock. Anyone who has tried to plant a tree here has met it. It matters for this subject because caliche does not let water pass. Dig down until you hit it, put a container in that hole, and you have built a basin. Liquid that is supposed to drain out into the soil instead sits at the bottom.
That is the single biggest reason these units struggle in this valley, and it is also the reason results vary so wildly between neighbors. One yard has workable soil to depth and the thing behaves. The next yard hits caliche and it never drains from day one.
Drainage generally
Even without caliche, a lot of local soil is compacted, fine and slow to accept water, and homes here sit on graded compacted pads. If your yard has a spot that stays wet for a day after rain, that is your soil telling you how fast it drains.
Heat, Dryness, and the Part That Stalls
The second requirement is moisture, and this is a desert. Soil here is dry most of the year, and the material inside a buried unit dries along with everything else unless somebody is deliberately adding water to it, which is its own conversation given how water is regulated locally.
Dry material does not break down. It sits. That is the same effect described in the composting post, and it is the same effect anyone sees with waste left on the surface of a rock yard: in this climate things dry out rather than decomposing.
Then there is heat. Summer here pushes shallow ground temperatures well past what most biological processes are comfortable with, and winter nights pull them back down. Neither extreme is fatal on its own, but combined with dryness and poor drainage it means the process people are counting on is running slowly at best, and not at all through big parts of the year.
The honest summary is that the concept is not wrong. The conditions are just not the ones it was designed for.
Odor, Flies, and Where People End Up Putting Them
When a buried unit is not processing, the contents sit. Sitting organic material in warm weather is exactly the thing flies are drawn to, and there is a separate post on dog waste and flies that covers that relationship in more detail.
So the practical failure is not that the unit stops working quietly. It is that it becomes a warm, contained, damp collection of waste with a lid on it in the middle of the yard, and in July people notice.
Which produces the second problem: placement. Nobody wants it near the patio, so it goes to the far corner. The far corner is usually where the block wall, the irrigation manifold and the trees are. Putting a hole full of decomposing waste next to an irrigation line, up against a wall footing, or anywhere near a vegetable bed or a fruit tree is exactly what I would not do, and it is where these units end up because it is the only place people are willing to put them.

What to Do With the One You Already Buried
Plenty of people read this after installing one, so here is the practical version.
Stop adding to it. Whatever state it is in, the situation does not improve by putting more in. Switch to bagging and binning in the meantime so nothing accumulates in the yard while you decide.
Leave it alone rather than digging it out on a hot day. If it has been in the ground a while and is full, excavating it is an unpleasant job and it is genuinely easy to hit an irrigation line or undermine something you did not know was there. If you want it out, that is a conversation with a landscaping professional who can see what else is buried in that corner. This is not work I do and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
If it drains well and it has been working for you, keep using it. Some yards in this valley do have soil that cooperates, and there is no reason to abandon something that is genuinely functioning.
The Disposal Method That Actually Works Here
The unglamorous answer wins in this climate: pick it up promptly, bag it, and put it in your own trash bin.
